Building on IH fundamentals, this intermediate three-day course is designed to provide additional training and knowledge in the aspects of industrial hygiene chemical monitoring through group exercises and discussion. Attendees work in groups of four and build on their knowledge gained in the Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene course. Each group is assigned to a department of a fictitious company. The groups review MSDS, identify similar exposure groups (SEG), conduct qualitative assessments, design quantitative sampling plans based on OSHA and NIOSH sampling methods (both direct reading and integrated sampling), calibrate equipment, prepare laboratory analysis requests, interpret monitoring results (SAE, mixture rule, extended shift OEL), identify potential control measures, and then communicate the results to both management and workers.

Electronic Handouts

In recent years, more and more conferences are working to become “green.” Green meetings or events incorporate environmental considerations to minimize negative impacts on the environment. AIHA has been progressively implementing green meeting initiatives for the last few years and has expanded its efforts to become more environmentally friendly. New initiatives have ranged from moving course information to the web, to our newest initiative—providing electronic handouts. Complete course materials will be provided electronically. Electronic handouts may be downloaded from the web; electricity will be provided in meeting rooms for laptop use.

Paperless handouts offer participants a variety of benefits:

  • Course handouts will be e-mailed two weeks prior to the course.  This allows last minute and current OEHS information to be incorporated.
  • Electronic PDF allows participants to view detailed images and content on each page and will have comment- and typewriter-enabled capacity.
  • Bookmarks provide a “table of contents” to better navigate materials; information will be completely searchable.
  • Live links provide instant access to additional references.
  • Ability to add comments and take notes in the electronic handout.
  • Convenient, portable handouts are easily stored, referenced, managed and retained.
  • Negative environmental impact is reduced by giving participants an option to save, transfer files to a laptop or other device, or print all or a portion of the material.
  • Electronic handouts are included in the course fee.  If you opt to have AIHA print and bind the handout for you and have it available for you on the first day of the course, there is a $50 fee.  For more information, visit www.aiha.org/eMats

Learning Aids

Each participant MUST bring:

  • A scientific calculator
  • A laptop computer
